Miyamoto Mushashi
A legendery swordsman (Musashi)

Back on board the ketch Lundyn set course for a rendezvous with the other four yachts with which they were going to travel through the pirate waters. He picked them up within a day after steaming under engine through the night. They were all making good progress and were soon crossing the equator. It seems this was the first time for Karen, so the General was dressed up as King Neptune and sat upon his throne, which was the steering seat for the ketch. Lundyn and Roscoe acted as his attendants and bought a rather meek Karen before him. “So Karen Philips, this is the first time you have entered the domain of the mighty King Neptune? We have a ritual for you to follow. Take her away men and give her the dunking.” With that Lundyn and Roscoe grabbed her by her arms and sat her in a plastic chair. She was blindfolded and then hoisted to the end of the mizzen boom. She could feel her self being hoisted up and then lowered to the end of the boom and over the side. Roscoe and Lundyn kept up the banter about how she was going to be dunked over the side and fed to the sharks and so on. Then at the last moment she was splashed from above with a bucket full of soapsuds. When she was pulled back on board and her arms untied and her blindfold removed she was still covered in a mass of soapsuds. She was again bought before the General. “So you have now been made a member of my nation and here are your official papers.” Lundyn had made up a passport on the computer with an embossed cover, which read ‘The Deep Realm of Neptune’. Inside it had a picture of a half naked Karen drawn by the General. Also she received an ‘official’ equator crossing certificate.



The next few days were relaxed and easy. The two men shared the favours of Karen as the mood took each of the three. It was an easy relationship and the three of them were more than pleased that it was going smoothly. The General smiled to himself and kept his own council. He had known the two men since they were young boys. He had seen them get into and out of a lot of fixes. This little affair would be a dandy. The ketch was now roughly abeam of Singapore and the other yachts with which they had been cruising in company were all going their own way. The general had arranged for a meeting of some of his cronies. It was to take place at sea. Lundyn used the ships Global Positioning System to fix the point on his chart. Normally he used celestial navigation but he knew he could be as much as 10 miles out with that system and the General’s buddies would not be keen on making the trip out from Singapore by speed boat not to find them where they said they would be.

The General had been through two major campaigns in the Australian army. He had served in Malaysia and also in Vietnam. His distinction had been tactics. He was not a real general but the name had become his nickname for his organising ability and his quick understanding of the enemy and their weakness. How to explore this weakness and strike quickly and decisively was also an art form. There were officers that were outranking him and trying to make tough decisions about committing men in the field. The General usually struck out and dealt his blow before the rest of the staff had known there was a problem. He had a network of field agents that trusted him and his word. He used all the information both good and bad to his advantage. It was he who introduced Lundyn and Roscoe to Miyamoto Musashi, the samurai who after the killing was over became an artist and a poet. Miyamoto Musashi had never lost a conflict and died an old man as much revered for his beautiful poetry and art as his lightning strikes with his two swords.
The General was also an exponent of Wushu, a type of martial art taught by the Taoist monks from the Shaolin Temple that was only just now becoming popular. He practised the inner way, which was more a use of the mind and hands. The monks were the original disciples of Zen when it was first bought to China from India. The use of Jujitsu and his own small boxing school complimented a rather sharp mind in a now weathered and, one must admit, slightly battered body. He had arranged a meeting with leading businessmen, police and armed forces leaders from the Asian region. Most were people he had met during his two campaigns but some were also exponents of his arts.

Lundyn raced the General over to the fast motor cruiser that was now idling its engines some 400 metres away. His ketch was hove to with the headsail backed and the helm hard over, it was drifting slightly with the current. The motor cruiser would hold station around the ketch. No radio contact had been made between the two vessels. Signal flags using a very old code were used. This was a very secret meeting of powerful men, many of whom were supposedly at unofficial war with each other as far as their governments were concerned. But in their own way they had kept contact and the General was an old friend seeking a favour. His ‘boys’ were in trouble and were living with an assassins mark over them. The General laid his information on the table. He had photos of Ho Sin Lee’s younger brother, several of his men and good video of pirates that had raided the tanker. Also there were the contents of the wallet and some email addresses. It would be enough to lead the police through Interpol to the leader of the drug runners and probably also the pirate chief. But it was agreed that under the circumstances a quick end to the matter was required. No need for prolonged court hearings and the information that tied the leader into the drugs and piracy was received in such a way that a good lawyer could make it any evidence gathered inadmissible. The General was assured that he would have all the information that was needed to do what he had to do when they arrived in Bangkok. The men drank a toast to each other’s health and despite not having seen the General for many years no idle chat was had. It was a clinical meeting but one obviously amongst many friends. A loyal toast of scotch was drunk ‘to friends’ and the meeting ended.

A Modern Day Pirate

CHAPTER 8
Drifting and helpless.

Karu Maru was a medium size tanker compared to the behemoths of the world. It specialised in carrying prepared fuel around the world. While sailing from the Bay of Bengal into the South China Sea via the Straights of Malacca it had been hijacked. A very fast speedboat had pulled up along side and men had boarded quite simply with grappling hooks and ropes. A very old fashioned system, almost as old as piracy itself.
They were well armed and the whole event took only minutes. Not carrying any significant arms, the crew did not retaliate and they were set adrift in lifeboat an hour after the fuel had been pumped into a second vessel. The Karu Maru was equipped to disgorge its own cargo as it often delivered fuel to remote areas and to countries that had poor facilities. It was a ship in high demand for delivering this style of cargo and now it was immobilised. The hijackers had severed the fuel supply to the engine of the ship. Until repairs could be made the ship could not be safely sailed. A tug with repairmen on board was rushing to the scene and the crew of the tanker had been found and were also being returned to their ship. The Indonesian authorities were on board and the ship’s insurance company was asking Lundyn for his on the spot appraisal.



When Lundyn’s ketch arrived on the scene he was only one of many vessels on the site. There were several speedboats that had bought in the press, the Indonesian navy patrol boat, the ship’s lifeboat and the ship that had returned the crew. There were two tugs now arranging a tow. Lundyn arranged to board the ship via the pilot’s ladder that was swung over the side. The General, who drove the ketch’s outboard powered zodiac, delivered him and Roscoe to the ship. On board they made themselves known to the commanding officer from the Indonesian navy and to the ship’s captain who was arranging for the engineers to carry out what repairs they could while the ship was taken into tow. The owners and the insurance company did not want to get into an expensive long tow to a suitable port. They hoped for a repair at sea that would enable the ship to carry on under its own steam.

The ship had been equipped with a video surveillance system. It was set up to cover the whole ship. It was used to cover the insurance companies butt in the event that the ship was to be alleged to contaminate the environment during loading or discharging fuels. An astute crewman had turned it on when he realised that an attack was under way. The navy officer asked if Lundyn wanted to see it. It was a fairly difficult tape to follow. It showed figures running around the deck all armed with what seemed like sub-machine guns. The figures were difficult to discern but as they ran up the steps to the bridge one camera picked up the faces. All seemed to be of Asian origin, young hard looking men with determined scowls on their faces. Then an alarm went off in Lundyn’s brain, two faces he had last seen on a cruiser tied up in the Swansea channel. They should have died with the rest of the crew when the cruiser blew up but here they were on a pirate expedition in the South China Sea! Lundyn was positive of his identification and he knew whom they had worked for in the past. No second-guessing as to whom they worked for now. The video went on and apart from the unloading of the fuel at which point the video had been discovered and turned off it seems there was not much more information. The second ship was not easily identifiable but the insurance company had experts available for that. He was sure that the second boat would be identified but would soon be unrecognisable or sunk once the cargo had been disposed of. It would probably even be a scam to sink the vessel just for the insurance at a later date. The modern pirate had many tricks.

Lundyn and Roscoe made a tour of the ship and could not find anything that required their attention. It would be a very brief report to the company. It was not going to be worth their while mentioning that they recognised the pirates. That would get them into a mess. Roscoe still had not disposed of the cash he had lifted from the drug boat and Lundyn could not afford being implicated in the blowing up of the cruiser full of would be assassins off Swansea Heads. Piracy these days was every bit as rife as in the days of old Bluebeard. It was costing the world economy many billions of dollars in lost revenue and it was making some people very, very rich. At first it was just a matter of some fisherman taking advantage of a situation. Now it was quite obvious that a number of experts were following the ships by computer and broken radio codes and computer hacked lists of cargo. The ship that was to be pirated was simply and usually viciously attacked. No survivors were normally left and once the cargo was shifted from one ship to another or in some cases the ship simply underwent a cosmetic face change or it was sunk.

That was the only fly in the ointment here. It seemed like a professional and well thought out attack. But the ship was simply left to float with an unusable engine and the crew allowed to live, albeit in a drifting lifeboat. It seemed like a new operation or… the man responsible for blowing up the ship had been blown up while sitting on a plastic chair off Swansea Heads! That would explain the connection, of the two recognisable crew. The trail still leads to Bangkok and once again Lundyn was in the right place at the right time.

lundyn Parker adventure # 7 - 3

November 28th 2006 18:34

That evening, still anchored off the little island, the three men pulled out their musical instruments and played some jazz. Roscoe and the General had cigarettes hanging from their lips and all three had a look of rapture on their faces. They took turns playing solo with their instruments. Long melodious soul stirring stuff that would not put any of them in a concert hall but made Karen’s hair tingle on the back of her neck. They had just finished a meal of crab and lobster stir fried in a spicy Thai style sauce. The meal was accompanied with steamed jasmine rice and a rich fruity Riesling wine from the Hunter valley. Coffee was brewing on the stove and a butter yellow moon was rising over the palm trees on the island. It cut a silver path to the ketch. A magical path that Karen felt she could simply walk a long and it would take her direct to the now floating orb. It would be a way out of her predicament. The last month had been one of the best in her life yet one of the most inwardly twisted as well. The horror of the murders aboard the cruiser was the worst, the suspicions of the police, the burying of her husband and then meeting these two fabulous men. Roscoe the tall, beast-like creature with impossibly huge shoulders and arms, his battered and scarred face and soft sensual soul. Lundyn, another enigma, tall and confident in everything he did. Not handsome or even attractive, he had the kind of face that would not stand out in a crowd. Yet it was not a plain face, it had character written over it. His tall sensuous body and the way he carried himself was in itself a turn on. His prowess in the bedroom she could vouch for. In fact, that was the trouble; both men were what she wanted in a lover. She could not decide so she had done nothing. She had not encouraged one or the other. Nor had either of the men seemed ready to take up where they had left off. At least that would have made it easier for her. But she was relaxed and her mind had nothing to do but worry about the day to day running of the ship and enjoying the sailing, the physical exercise she could join in with the men and just chilling out. Yet still in the pit of her stomach she could feel that somehow she had to decide.



Roscoe and Lundyn had put away their instruments and were relaxing with coffee in the cockpit. The General was forward of the main mast with a mouth organ blowing out some blues. Karen came to join the two men. She was still dressed in her Sulu and had not added a T-shirt, as the night was quite hot and humid. Her breasts jiggled as she sat on the bench, each large and rounded perfectly and peaked with perky dark nipples. She still clutched a half glass of wine in her hand and raised it to the men in salute. “A great night of music guys,” she said. “It really is soul stirring stuff.” The two men saluted back, raising their coffee cups in return. Roscoe was watching her intently. With the bright moonlight he could make out the soft body hair on her stomach. Her stomach now hard as a washboard. Her face was clear of any make up but her lips seemed full and luscious, her smile enigmatic yet inviting. He was the one that finally broke the ice for the three of them. ‘You know Karen, that Lundyn and I are the very best of mates. There is nothing between us and nothing would come between us. We are open in everything we do. So if you feel that we might be hurt by anything you do don’t be.”

She could not remember which of the men she taken first. She seemed to move between them both like quicksilver. It was mixture of hard battering sex and soul satisfying lovemaking. It had come to a head in the cabin after the dishes were done. Two of them passing in the cabin face to face and she had simply rubbed her breasts along his chest. Which one was it? It didn’t matter. She simply let her physical side take over. The erection she felt as her hand moved to his crotch, blood pounding through the vessel. Hard muscles and sweat drenched bodies, the smell of sex so prominent in the close cabin. Her bunk was made up and she had one, then the other, right there. Did they watch each other? She did know or care. She poured out all her charms; all her physical and mental being was surrendered that night and they poured into her all the pent up sexual desire that was felt in them for so long. The sex and the lovemaking lasted till dawn. All three were shattered and lying naked around the saloon. Sleeping soundly nobody heard the General hoist the sails and raise the anchor. The ketch was two hours from the island before Lundyn appeared by the General’s side. He had washed and towelled down and dressed in just a pair of shorts. The General noted the bruise marks of Karen’s lips and teeth over his chest and shoulders. He pointed to them and said with a wry smile. “Should I go and get the first aid kit?” Lundyn grinned back but did not say anything. He noted the course and speed and dropped back below to the navigation table. Down here the other two were stirring. Karen was at the heads and Roscoe was lying back on a bunk with his massive hands clasping the back of his head. He was looking off into space, with dreamy look in his eyes. He glanced at Lundyn sitting in the navigator’s chair watching him. “Bugger me Lundyn, what a night. What an absolute ball buster of a night. Is she some woman or what?” Lundyn smiled at Roscoe and nodded. He did not want to add to what he had said. He too was quite flabbergasted at the turn of events.

The four held a council after breakfast. Although no one mentioned last night’s adventure directly it was still clear that more was to come. A broader smile here and there, a casual touch and just Karen sitting closer to her two lovers. It was decided that everyone was now to be extremely careful. They were just 7 degrees south of the equator and their object lay about another 12 degrees north of the equator. A little over 1000 miles to go but the boat traffic was getting much more dense and fishing boats in particular were dotted all over the sea. They were in radio contact with four other yachts at the time, one American, one Dutch and two South African. They were all roughly in a circle of 15 miles diameter and could be within site of each other in about an hour if there was to be any piracy trouble. Three of the yachts, including Lundyn’s had agreed to use their radar to track them over the next couple of days. Any suspicious vessels approaching any of the five individual yachts would be investigated as a group immediately. Lundyn had advised his insurance contacts of his whereabouts. It was a common practice of his and often he would get work just because he was handy in the area. Several days later he had just such a call. It came via his Internet line. It was to do with a large fuel tanker that was now drifting in waters just south of the equator. It was a days steaming away if he used his engine.

While sailing through the Great Barrier Reef, Lundyn anchored several times to do some diving. He and Roscoe went free diving over a reef and collected lobsters. It was a good chance to top up the freezer and, from the deck; Karen and the General were busy fishing with hand lines. They were also quite successful and this helped to feed them for several days. Some of the islands provided oysters and they took several pails full to be devoured at night with their ‘sun downer’ drinks. Any excursion to shore was an excuse for a training run and some light boxing practice on the soft sandy beaches. By this time they were about two weeks into their trip and all four of them were burnt brown by the sun and looking well relaxed. Karen got news via an email that her husband was being released for burial. Lundyn decided to head for McKay where the nearest airport was situated. There they disembarked Karen, took on more supples and continued their voyage.

lundyn Parker adventure # 6 - 3

November 23rd 2006 18:33
Ho Sin Lee was swathed in a cloud of cheap tobacco smoke. He crouched over his computer console and jabbed his fingers at the keyboard in short staccato blasts. He was wearing grey slacks and a black silk shirt buttoned right up to the collar. It accentuated his thin neck and frame. His gold-rimmed glasses reflected back the pale blue hue of the computer screen giving his face an eerie glow. His thoughts were on many things right now. His business plans were slowly evolving to take on more than just his drug dealing. With so many crews now on his payroll delivering the drugs he was entering into copycat crime of a grander proportion. He knew of a load of aviation fuel bound for China. The fuel was badly needed and there was currently a premium on the delivered price. If he could way lay the tanker delivering the fuel, exchange the fuel onto another tanker he could then negotiate the sale of the fuel with a fuel hungry state. He had people in China who could negotiate the sale for a fee and he had a tame crew on the fuel tanker who could arrange to be pirated and then he could exchange the fuel at sea onto another tanker that was already in the hands of a crew in his pay. No lives would be lost. One crew would simply be set adrift in a lifeboat with little food or water. They would soon be discovered near the busy Malaccan Straights.

Also still on Ho Sin Lee’s mind was the drubbing he had got from Lundyn Parker. The vision of his assassin swung out over the ocean on a white plastic chair was still infuriating him. And later as well the photo of him underwater smiling and sticking up his fingers at him! The wreck of the cruiser under water, another waste of money. The cruiser was to be used in an attack on the fuel ship. His brother had only survived the blast of the mine that the stupid crew had helped set off. He had been blown into the water with one of the crew and if the self-opening life raft had not surfaced he would have lost his lieutenant and would have been forced to do some of the dirty work himself. It would have been better to let one man die than lose a whole boat and five of its good crew, imbeciles- that is what they were. Well Parker would have to wait on the back burner for a while. He had other things on his mind right now. But he did still fret for the half a million dollars that had been stolen off him and the loss of the Mustang cruiser. The drug wars were hotting up in Bangkok with the police shooting dealers where they stood on the corners with their customers. Over a thousand had died in a little over nine months. This was the amphetamine business. It was relatively new to Thailand and introduced by local gangsters and the Burmese generals. It was a localised business set up for Thai nationals mainly who were rich enough to play with the ‘happy pills’. It did not affect his drug business other than he had to circumvent the borders of Burma with more care. The shooting of dealers and dealers shooting people they thought would be made to talk about them made for an uncomfortable time with the police. But if he were careful that side of his business would flourish while the police chased others closer to home.

Lundyn pondered the contents of the wallet as he steered the launch across the lake toward Toronto. Fong Sin Lee was probably the skipper of the vessel that was sunk, given where the wallet was found. So he was probably alive. The business cards were mainly from different businesses in Thailand and some from Australia. One was from a marine broker in Sydney and he was probably the one who sold the yacht to Fong Sin Lee. One card was of particular interest. It was written with Chinese characters but an email address was given in English. It was the same address given by the poor departed Hamash. And it seemed that the clue lead to Thailand. He would have the business card translated at the local Chinese restaurant where he was a well-known customer. His next problem was Karen. She was, he decided, making overtures to him. Not terribly subtle either. Her body language just screamed to him that she was available. He felt the stirrings within himself and despite having to develop his photos as quickly as possible to send to the insurance company he decided to take the time to get to know Karen better.

“I need to stop off at my home and pick up a change of clothes and then I can drop you at the wharf.” Lundyn said to Karen.

At the dive site Lundyn was now geared up to go down and the motor driving the compressor, running the hooka system, was purring as only such a compressor could. The dive flag was up and the boarding ladder was down. Roscoe looked slowly around their dive site and quizzically asked Lundyn, “Isn’t this where the bad guys went down?”
“Roger to that.” replied Lundyn. “Can you believe our luck? The insurance company wants us to check out the site. Not because of suspicion of fraud but because the boat sank and nobody wants to collect insurance. Now that does make them suspicious. The captain and a crewman survived when it went down. They floated off in a life raft, which automatically set off its epirb telling Australian Sea Search and Rescue that they were in trouble. They were picked up with in three hours and so it was easy to work out from the tides where the boat would have sank.” Roscoe nodded his head sagely and drew hard on the roll up cigarette he was holding. The smoke wafted off in the sea breeze and Karen looked questioningly at the two men.
“Why do I get the idea that this is unfinished business and that it involves me?”

‘Do you reckon they’ll go for him”? asked Roscoe. ‘Were going to be in for a fight if they don’t. It’s a better than fifty fifty chance. They think they have us on toast. They are faster, better armed and there is nobody out here to see their dirty work. They think all the odds are on their side now. They haven’t done their homework on us so they don’t really know who they are dealing with.” The two men watched and heard the engines of the cruiser slow to a crawl as they approached Hamash. It would be awkward to lift him out of the water.

Lundyn was down below typing in the information. The website was nothing special but it did look like it may be a link in the chain. He sent a picture of Hamash in the chair hovering over the water as an attachment to the email address. No message- just the attachment of a scared terrorist hanging out over the water with a bomb under his bum.
He hurried back on deck. He said nothing now to Hamish, for him he had ceased to exist.

November 14th 2006 18:15
In Sydney, Karen was spending time with girlfriends. She was attending lunches, morning teas and the odd trip to a local pub. Her friends were looking after her. Not giving her time to mourn or grieve, they thought. Ben, her husband had been a great romance when they first met. He was wealthy and free spending. He charmed her and in bed they were as well matched as two people could be. However after some time being married and with neither of them particularly interested in having children the sex and romance had worn off. He had plenty of other interests, perhaps even love interests thought Karen. What with the drug smuggling and whatever! She knew in her heart that she was still a possible suspect in that crime as far as the police were concerned. No, her grieving was for a friend who had passed away. That was all that the relationship was toward the end. She was young and still spirited; she didn’t want to be a grieving widow in black for long.

After arranging what she could with regards to Ben’s affairs she decided to hire a car and drive north up the coast. She said goodbye to her girlfriends at a cocktail bar in the city and with a carefree heart she took to the road. Nothing now was tying her down other than a funeral that was still to be attended and of course she had to let the police know where she was at all times. The little car hummed along the free way eating up the miles and before long she was crossing the Hawkesbury River. This wide river was the boundary for the Sydney metropolitan area and marked what was known as the Central Coast. She was trying to work out in her mind, how to get to see her ‘A’ team guys again. The site of the broad river dotted with cruisers and houseboats had a calming effect on her mind and the doubts about meeting the two men again started to fade. She formed a plan to stay on the lake where the men lived and to arrange a visit. Relaxed now at having actually made up her mind about seeing them again she sped on through the sandstone hills covered with the dry blue coloured eucalypt trees. She was even feeling horny she thought to herself!

The trip to Wangi only took and hour and a half, done with one tack and a gybe. It was a beautiful sailing trip, with water hissing along the hull and the warm breeze rollicking around the yacht. She heeled slightly to the breeze and the men were all smiles. They hardly saw any other yachts, as it was a weekday. The lack of traffic was the best part about sailing on magnificent Lake Macquarie. Tied up and squared away at the Wangi Worker’s Club wharf, the men went into the club for a few beers. They chatted amongst themselves and a few of the local yachties joined their table to talk with them. It was a casual atmosphere. A club right on the waterfront with a bistro and restaurant. The place was sprinkled with barflies, most of who were known to the trio. Chatting was mainly about sailing and yachts and forthcoming races. One piece of scuttlebutt was a topic of interest. A new power cruiser was in the lake. It had come in during the night and was tied up across the lake at the marina there. The crew were all of Asian descent. That was not unusual in a lot of ports but here on this quiet lake it stood out like a sore thumb.

On board Lundyn’s yacht, which he also calls home, the two men were in deep discussion. “I think you really took a chance knocking off that money and those packets of drugs. I know you didn’t think the cops should have it but you know how this stuff always gets back to us.”
“Yeah, I know,” replied Roscoe. “It was just such a spur of the moment thing. Those guys lying there dead all covered in each other’s gore. All they had been fighting about was this money and some drugs.” Roscoe hung his head. “I can’t give it back now. The cops have done the paper work and it would piss them off and I could just end up in jail for confessing my sins. Anyhow I could use a bit of the money for renovating the pub. The bistro and dining room could do with a going over. That would use half of it and I could use the rest for something else I guess.”
“Sure.” said Lundyn. “You can always use a half a million when it falls in your lap but it’s not like you actually need it. I can guarantee you that there is trouble on the horizon for this.”

November 8th 2006 18:08
The carpet was sponging up the blood as it dripped to the floor but it was smeared all around the walls where the skipper had fought with his assailant. The stench of the diver’s bowels and the bodily fluids leaking from the others was overpowering. But Roscoe and Lundyn, while not exactly used to the stench, had both experienced enough to harden themselves to what had happened. Dead men, nothing could be done for them. Working out how they had died was fairly obvious. Why had they died was fairly obvious too. Packets of money were strewn around the cabin, all tied up with rubber bands. With the crew finished off he could finish off Karen and be gone into the night. A short swim to his boat which will probably be out on Broughton Island and back to Nelson Bay to spend his money.”
