lundyn Parker adventure # 9 cont

December 2nd 2006 22:39
Frank gathered his friends up and took them to a booth inside his bar and sat them down. Roscoe and Lundyn were drinking mineral water and the General was drinking local Singha beer. He clapped his hands and rattled off orders and more drinks came with a mineral water for him. He beamed at his friends as he asked what was going on. He had heard on the grape vine that some of the General’s friends were looking for a contact on the drug scene. Bangkok was still reeling from the ‘happy pill’ wars. Small dealers and their users were being wiped out by suppliers who were scared of being caught by the police, who had started one of the biggest crack-down ever on these drugs. They were a menace to Thai society. Unlike the drugs being exported around the world these were locally made for the local market. There were lots of rumours as to who was in which trade. As a bar owner and working in the nightclub district Frank saw a lot and kept a lot to himself. He had however narrowed down his opinion to two men. And with the information that the General’s friends had supplied, one of the two was becoming a very firm suspect. “He keeps very much to himself,” said Frank “He has a large house on the waterfront in a bay about thirty miles out from the city. He has several brothers and it is one of these that acts as front man for him. It was his picture that was being shown around.”

“Bingo.” said Lundyn. “That certainly sounds like our man!” I have his email address and now if we think we have his home address we can stake him out and flush him out. What else do you know about him?”
“He is like most guys, he likes his women and he likes them hot and big breasted.” Frank grinned at the trio. “I send him any new girls that are likely to fill the bill. He pays well and I guess in his own way he treats the girls well. He only likes them for one night. He has a house keeper who checks the girls out first.”

Armed with this information the men set off to the boxing ring. Tonight was to be their exhibition fight at the Lumphin Boxing Stadium. The Thais take their Muai Thai style of fighting very seriously and crowds attend matches that are held almost every night of the week at both the large venues. Thai boxing is commonly known as kick boxing but it is more than just kicking. Elbows and gloved-fists as well as knees are used. The boxers are supremely well trained and are kept at a peak of physical fitness. Boxing over the centuries in Thailand was a not only a sport for the common man but it was a sport of kings. Many Thai kings in the past were superb boxers and chose their personal guards from boxing matches held in their palace gardens. In those days matches were bare-fisted knuckle bouts. Now a days there is much wagering and a lot of yelling of advice from the crowds. It is a sporting spectacle and Roscoe and Lundyn were to add to it tonight with their brand of bare-knuckle boxing. The men sat with some of the trainers about three rows back from the ring. It was a close and heated atmosphere. The energy level of the place was electric. Two young men were in the ring now giving there all for the crowd. They wore light leather boxing gloves and took up a stance rather akin to the regular boxing stance. But that was the only similarity. They battered at each other with elbows and fists and as one broke free the other would swirl like a ballet dancer and lash out with his feet smacking hard around his opponents head and shoulders. It was high energy fighting. The most any fighter could mange was 5 three minute rounds with 2 minute breaks.

In the back of the stadium, in a common change room, the General was preparing Roscoe and Lundyn for the fight. They wore light soled athletic shoes and long legged track pants. Each was well greased around the eyebrows and nose where a fist could strike and break skin. Their fists were bare and the knuckles of each hand were toughened with continued use of boxing bags and pounding into sand and saw dust. Both men were exponents of the two styles of the sport. Few people were keen on bare knuckle fighting these days as it was assumed that it was a ‘no holds barred’ form of fighting. It was the Marquis of Queensbury that introduced modern boxing rules. That is not to say that the old style of boxing did not have its own rules. Today there are a small growing number of bare-knuckle fighters emerging. But it is a science that has to be relearned. The fist when it strikes an opponent must be horizontal rather than vertical. It is a way of protecting the knuckles in the fist from damage. The arm is thrown more like a sword than the rounded powerhouse throws of the modern boxer. It requires all the energy of the legs, hips, shoulders and arms to be directed to the fist and driven home. Because of the damage that can be done the bare fisted pugilist stands a little further back from his opponent than the gloved fighter who can use his huge gloves as a shield as well as a weapon. The fighting is usually slower and though more damage can be done with the bare-knuckled fist it is generally quite a safe sport except at the elite top where, because matches have no fixed time limit, the winner is the man who can beat the other into submission. There are few knockdowns or KO’s in a bare-knuckle fight. For this reason grappling was allowed. If a fighter could get close enough through the guard of his opponent he would grapple with him and try to force him to the ground and so end the fight. Getting an opponent in a headlock then smashing him into submission with your fist was also a good winning stroke. Holding your opponent by the hair was also a good way of getting off enough punches to beat out a submission. Roscoe was bald headed for just that reason.

The fight in progress was coming to a close. A huge American serviceman and a South African with a crew cut of equally large build were slugging it out in the ring. Compared to the much smaller Thai men they seemed quite slow moving but their kicks were thrown with a dexterity equal to any man likely to fight in the ring tonight. Because of the size of the men the kicks were harder than any seen tonight and bought appreciative roars from the crowd. It was the last round and the referees were gauging the skill level of the two men. It had been a close fought battle and there was nothing in it from a point’s basis and neither of the two was running out of steam. There was little chance of a knockdown here. The bell rang to finish the round and quickly the tournament manager crowned the black American serviceman the winner. He was popular crowd choice. The crowd meant everything to him. It was the crowd that came that paid his wages and kept him in his life style. He picked the fights and presented them to pander to the crowd.

Now it was the turn of the two Australians. The tournament manager took up a microphone and striding around the ring, he called to the crowd to prepare themselves for entertainment that would seldom ever be seen in this arena. An exhibition match between two Australian exponents of the art of bare-knuckle pugilism. As he explained the rules to the crowd two girls in skimpy costumes carried large placards with full-length photos of the men in their bare-knuckle boxing stance. In the second row of the crowd Ho Sin Lee sucked his breath as he saw the photo of Lundyn. He turned to his brother beside him and said. “So he is here. Why do we not take care of him and that gorilla on our own soil? See to it after the fight.” His brother nodded and got up to leave. As he did two well-dressed Thai men carefully followed his movements and shadowed him out of the stadium.
